Go with the flow: My best tips for losing Control

    April 19, 2016 /

Are you a bit of a control freak? Do you like to control every.single.thing? I am. Well, I was until I began losing control and life’s so much better. I’m in a control recovery program. It’s called Jesus. I’m learning that a lot of my control issues were really a type of temper tantrum about not wanting to trust God for my future. Go with the flow would never have been used to describe my personality. NEVER. I still need five minutes for deep breaths after a surprise change of plans. I’m learning to embrace changes, but I’ve had a lifetime of practice with my control habit. (Heaven not…

This is the Real Work of a Christian Mother

    April 16, 2016 /

Being a Christian mother was all I ever wanted, but now that I’m here, sometimes, I fashion myself a writer. I sit on my couch, mug of coffee brewing inspiration inside my head, believing that sharing my tiny words are worth the tedious hours buried behind my computer. (Heaven not Harvard is as a participant in affiliate programs including the Amazon Associates Program. As an affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases.) I sometimes even believe that my writing is the noble work I’m doing with my present days. I sweat ink and bleed commas and stumble my way through learning all this techno blogging rot to share my faith with…

Fighting Doubt: A Review of Help My Unbelief and GIVEAWAY

    April 14, 2016 /

Doubt is not something we freely discuss often. Even mature Christians often feel like we are supposed to skim over the doubts and questions, putting on a brave face until they go away. Want a free copy? Enter the giveaway at the end of this post! Barnabas Piper’s book Help My Unbelief challenges this status quo that DOUBT is a dirty word, instead suggests if we’re honest, doubt is a part of our Christian walk; we have this tension between our faith and flesh that pulls us away from closeness with God at times. Piper offers ways to embrace doubt as a challenge to grow closer to God, build a…

The Only Baby Advice You Really Need

    April 11, 2016 /

I’ve found the only baby advice you really need. It’s the advice I wish I had known before my daughter was born, something I have to remember daily, and still true if your baby is 2, 10, 25, or 45. So last year, I traveled across the country for my sister’s baby shower. She was expecting a much prayed over, long-hoped for baby, who is now a super adorable 1 year old! Part of her baby shower was that we were asked to share our best baby advice on these cute onesie-shaped cards that my mom placed into an album for her. Talk about pressure – how do you summarize…

How to Teach your Toddler to Quit Whining: Ask Away Thursday

    April 7, 2016 /

Reader Question: How do I teach my toddler to quit whining? Ugh, I get it! Whining just exasperates me! Children must be born with the ability to whine and the innate knowledge that it grates on mommy nerves. My mother-in-law jokingly suggested giving them everything they want. I know for a fact that was not her strategy with her children or mine. She is a bit more old school and tends to just tell them to knock it off, which can be fairly effective from Grandma, but not so much from mom. But this is an age old problem. And I’m sure my solution isn’t new, but it’s what works…
