How to Teach your Toddler to Quit Whining: Ask Away Thursday

    April 7, 2016 /

Reader Question: How do I teach my toddler to quit whining? Ugh, I get it! Whining just exasperates me! Children must be born with the ability to whine and the innate knowledge that it grates on mommy nerves. My mother-in-law jokingly suggested giving them everything they want. I know for a fact that was not her strategy with her children or mine. She is a bit more old school and tends to just tell them to knock it off, which can be fairly effective from Grandma, but not so much from mom. But this is an age old problem. And I’m sure my solution isn’t new, but it’s what works…

3 Ways to be a Happier Mom

    December 8, 2015 /

Do you want to be a happier mom? Be a Mom without complaining. Did you just laugh? Because momming is soul sucking. You have an MBA but just spent ten minutes arguing with a two-year-old that the strawberry jam in the squeeze bottle is exactly the same as the jar. Cleaning house is pointless. You want a healthy, clean house for a tiny person who leaves messes in his wake like Godzilla in Tokyo. Life is a never-ending cycle of feeding people, cleaning up after people and doing chores over and over and over. And sometimes there is poop – okay, lots of times, there is poop. So how do…

The Empty Chair – Have you Missed God’s Invitation?

    October 18, 2015 /

How it hurts when we crave the presence of someone special in our home and around our table that doesn’t come. How convicting it is to realize that we’ve been the invited, treasured guest who did not come to the feast. Ice Cream Messages

    June 29, 2015 /

Tonight I was searching for God’s answers to some big prayers. As I wrote about our day, I realized this evening’s events are a perfect example of the way I experience God’s answers in my everyday mom moments. Earlier, my daughter ran inside shrieking. The ice cream truck was driving past our house! Mommy, mommy, mommy. She jumped up and down. “The ice cream truck!” Last time we saw him was a night we weren’t planning a big meal, so we chased the converted school bus down the road, but couldn’t catch him to get any ice cream. I had promised we would try again another day. But here was…
