Unplanned is the Movie We All Need to See
Unplanned is an incredibly important movie. I went in agreeing with everything the films stands for, and STILL left changed.
It wasn’t an easy film to decide to watch in the theater. And yet, here I am begging you to go see it anyway. Even if you’re already pro-life. Even if you don’t think you can see such a heavy movie.
And even if you have to take a fist full of tissues and wear waterproof mascara, go see it!
This movie is hard to watch in some places. While a typical action movie with an R rating is much more violent, the difficult scenes are so raw and powerful that even being prepared for them, I wasn’t prepared for how they would affect me.

But Abby Johnson, the subject of Unplanned, didn’t want to make a safe movie. She wanted to make a movie that would change hearts and minds because all “she ever wanted was to help women“. Somewhere in the middle of her story, in an ultrasound room, she realized that abortion and Planned Parenthood wasn’t about helping women at all.
God walked her to a moment of harsh, but incredible clarity and changed her heart forever towards abortion.
We all need to see this powerful moment and feel the weight of what we’ve allowed to become normal.
Unplanned is the movie we all need to see.
Someday, people will wonder how we all stood by and allowed the mass murder of billions of babies. This movie pulls back the curtain on abortion and the outright deception practiced by Planned Parenthood and pro-choice advocates.
But Unplanned is more than just a movie about abortion. It balances the heavy story with light moments and ends in a place of hope. It especially has a powerful message about God’s redemption of someone who felt irredeemable. Yet, after years of people praying for her, God reached into Abby Johnson’s life and extended her His beautiful grace.
God made her a missionary in the minefield. He took her ashes and made them beautiful. I found a lot of hope and joy in this film despite the emotional scenes.
While the movie had difficult scenes to watch, I wasn’t left shattered as much as empowered to make a difference in the fight against abortion.
This movie was prayerfully made from the very beginning. The directors had a dedicated prayer team during the filming! The story of how Ashley Bratcher came to star in the film and how God positioned her for such a film as this is emotional and powerful. Her performance was exceptional.

So why should you go see this film?
If I support Christian artists, I want to put my money where my mouth is. We need to let the world know Christians will financially support films about hard topics.
The producers openly discuss making this movie without knowing if they could pay the cast and crew each week. Hollywood is deliberately trying to derail any attempts to tell this story.
Going to see such a movie in the theater supports not only that movie, but the next hard movie that needs to be made. But financial support is only one reason to go see this film.
WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT ‘I CAN ONLY IMAGINE’
We need to be shaken.
Since 1980, 1.5 BILLION babies have been aborted world-wide. A quarter of our world’s population has been eradicated at our own hands. More African-American babies are being aborted than being born in many communities.
Many of us don’t remember a life before abortion was legal. We’ve grown up confronted with pro-choice propaganda and accepting a lot it as normal. And this film will shake you, even if you’re already pro-life. You can’t look away from this truth once you see it.
Unplanned walked the line between necessary clarity without being overly gory with the exception of a few necessarily graphic scenes to tell the truth.

Yet the scenes that affected me the most weren’t the obvious ones. Watching Abby stand over her own baby after a rough day at Planned Parenthood made me cry. I was overcome by the incongruity of killing babies at work to come home and soothe hers.
The director’s father, a pro-choice Jewish man, was so overcome by the barrel scene that he changed his entire stance on abortion from that one seemingly innocuous scene.
Additionally, this movie tells the truth about Planned Parenthood.
Telling the truth about abortion is powerful and necessary, but so is telling the truth about Planned Parenthood. The lies about who they are and what they do are so rampant and prevalent that most people refuse to believe the truth even when shown accurate statistics.
Planned Parenthood is about making money and profiting from the deaths of children and destruction of lives and families. There might be some volunteers and low level employees who do not know the truth, but only because they are not willing to see.
I have always been against abortion, but I wasn’t always pro-life. God worked on my heart several years ago that legalized abortion is not defensible.

I had bought into the lie that we can’t legislate morality, which is ridiculous when you take five seconds to consider it. All laws legislate morality.
God spent many years correcting my heart and head about abortion.
Watching this movie might be part of your journey into being more than just pro-life but being an advocate for the unborn. Learning the truth about abortion and being able to stand with grace and peace for life with those who disagree with you starts with being passionate and informed.

I went to different theaters on back to back nights to see Unplanned. On Thursday, we had 7 in our group and there may have been 30 to 40 people watching the showing. A local crisis pregnancy center, a pro life support center in my community had an event and rented out a separate theather for the same time we saw the movie. Friday night, I went with a different group of friends and I was happy the theater appeared to be 75% full. I had two miscarriages, and months of fertility treatments before being blessed by God with the adoption of our beautiful son. This was not easy to watch, but I felt I had to. I prayed, I cried and squirmed thinking about my girls night out the next night with seeing the flim again on the agenda. The second time I was able to truly hear the story, I was not waiting for any shocking moment, I knew what was coming.
I was prepared for the most difficult scenes. I cried the second time I saw the movie. Harder than the first time I saw it the day before. I pray word of mouth helps make this movie stay on the minds and hearts of everyone. As for the refusal of media outlets to advertise, that is a political cop out. I have seen much more gore and controversial topics on network television…Grey’s Anatomy or Law and order:SVU. Bottom line, if you are pro life or just curious about what the issue is, it will be the best movie ticket you have purchased in a very long time. It really us a matter of life or death. Choose life.

If even half of America would watch this movie, abortion would end tomorrow!
God bless!
