The Best Christian Rules to Teach your Daughter

    June 21, 2019 /

Have you read the rules to teach your daughter going around Facebook? I’ve seen that heart-warming, feel-good list a few times, but never read it carefully. It always seemed like an empowering, you go girl kind of list. Thumbs up, heart it and move on. But when I slowed down to actually read it, I was surprised by how many of those rules don’t line up with how God instructs us to live. In fact, following some of these rules led me down some paths that I don’t want my daughter to walk. I would rather her skip those portions of my coming of age if possible. Seriously, if I…

How to Better Pray for Your Children

    May 23, 2019 /

Of course, you want to pray for your children. But maybe, you struggle with being as intentional about it as you want to be. I found some ideas that help me better pray for my child. Hopefully, these ideas will help you, too. I made praying a bigger part of my life a few years ago, but deliberately am trying to grow in this area daily. The more I make prayer a dedicated part of my life, the more I’ve seen God answer my prayers. I’ve spent years writing down every prayer for my husband or keeping a prayer journal of all the prayer requests I have. But this year,…

    Yes! You can Homeschool Bravely!

    April 2, 2019 /

Yes, you can Homeschool bravely! Maybe your thought is Not me, I’m not a teacher. How could I possibly homeschool at all, much less bravely??? But I really want to assure you, you can homeschool. Homeschooling your children is a journey of growing together as a family and growing as an educator. You don’t have to have it all figured out on day one. You learned parenting as your child grew. Learning how to teach is a process too. As the work gets more challenging, you’ll get better at it, I promise. I remember being nervous about homeschooling. Even as a former high school teacher (17 years in the classroom),…

What Mom did while you were sleeping . . .

    August 22, 2016 /

If you’re a mom, you’ve crept across a toy littered floor to your child’s bedside to watch your baby sleeping. You’ve smoothed stray locks, wiped warm foreheads, and whispered I love you one more time. Those are savored memories, stowed away treasures. But our kids have no idea. Most of the time, they sleep right through these moments that only we hold. The childhood of my daughter, for whom I waited and waited, is beyond precious to me. And like a wonderful novel, I’m constantly balancing between wanting to savor every page and racing to see how it all turns out. Because someday, she will be an adult and sleeping…

    Muppet Show Misses Mark

    September 23, 2015 /

One of my favorite parts of parenthood is watching the wonder and joy on my daughter’s face when I introduce her to precious memories from my childhood, so I was excited when I saw the Muppets were coming to ABC. So much television isn’t appropriate for families anymore, that I was really looking forward to having something we could all enjoy together. I remember Saturdays were bath night; we all raced to finish in time for The Muppet Show, which we watched as a family. I remember the funny chickens and Gonzo, the Swedish chef, and poor unfortunate Beeker. I remember laughing at the grumpy old guys and Fozzy’s perpetually…
